How to create the illusion of space with tiles

Wouldn’t it be great if we all had the luxury to have our ideal size for every room in the house? Unfortunately, that’s not the case; so, how can we make these not-so-big spaces feel bigger?

Tiles have the power of creating a space illusion; if chosen and laid correctly, they can make your room seem larger. Here are three tile design choices that can create the illusion of a much larger space.

• Use Large Format Tiles

The larger the tile, the less grout lines you have. When you have more grout lines, there’s more to detract the eye which in turn will make your flooring look busier and smaller as a result. Stick to large format floor tiles so that you get fewer grout lines and a bigger room overall. You can see a selection of our large format tiles here.

• Use a similar colour grout to your tile choice

After you have selected your perfect tile, it is time for grout selection. Choosing a contrasting grout colour to your tile will create emphasis on the grout lines and therefore make the space feel restricted. If the grout and tiles are of similar or the same tone it will create the illusion of a bigger space.

• Use the same colour on walls and floors

When selecting a tile for your ‘small’ space, select one colour and apply it to the entire space. Laying the same colour tile on floor and walls creates a flow within the room and, in turn, will make for a more spacious feel.
